"Failed to Authenticate" error when logging into Pokémon GO

If you are receiving a "failed to authenticate" error when trying to log in to Pokémon GO, please reboot/restart your phone and then log in to Pokémon GO again. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, please visit the Niantic support page at: https://niantic.helpshift.com/a/pokemon-go/?p=web&l=en for further assistance. To verify you have opted in for Pokémon GO in your Pokémon Trainer Club (PTC) account. 

  1. Go to www.pokemon.com and select Log In from the left-hand navigation bar.
  2. Enter your user name and password and then verify you have accepted the Pokémon GO Terms of Use. Reminder: your user name may differ from your screen name or your Pokémon GO Trainer name.
  3. From the Edit Profile options, select Pokémon GO settings.
  4. Directly above the Pokémon GO Terms of Use, you should see the following text box displayed:
    “Great! You're all set to play Pokémon GO. Additional settings can be changed in the Pokémon GO app."
  5. If you do not see the text above, you need to be sure to read thru and then accept the Terms of Use. You should then be able to log into Pokémon GO using your PTC account!

To log into Pokémon GO:

If you have signed in to Pokémon GO and played the game using your Pokémon Trainer Club account previously and want to continue that game, do the following:

  • Tap the SIGN IN button (directly under Returning Player?) and then choose Pokémon Trainer Club, and sign in using your Pokémon Trainer Club account user name and password. This is the same account you used to log into www.pokemon.com.

If you have NOT signed in to Pokémon GO and played the game previously using your Pokémon Trainer Club account, do the following:

  • Tap the CREATE ACCOUNT button (directly under New Player?) and then choose Pokémon Trainer Club, and sign in using your Pokemon Trainer Club account user name and password.

After signing in, a new game of Pokémon GO will begin.
